My obsession

So when did my obsession start? Much to my dismay when I started thinking about this post, it's been almost 34 years since my husband (then boyfriend) purchased me my first piece of turquoise jewelry. Even with my Mother's Native American Heritage she never wore much jewelry, so I don't think I could get by with blaming her!!

As a young girl the pieces he first bought me were certainly smaller and more delicate. Where as today I wear many of the large impressive pieces. Guess as I grew so did my jewelry. That's the best part of this jewelry, the sizes and styles are endless, so no matter what your style or taste, there's a piece to fit you.

Indian Jewelry has been made for centuries, today it is created, worn, and sold almost everywhere in the Southwest. American Fashion designer Bill Blass made the statement " American Indian jewelry is indeed timeless and looks wonderful when worn with modern clothes--day or evening." I agree wholeheartedly.

Many times I wear very traditional pieces, such as the squash blossom with a concha belt, this look isn't for everyone but it's a good fit for me.
There are other times I pull together a much more modern look with my Indian pieces complimenting my Kippy's or Simon's belts.
Large turquoise pieces are a killer look with that little black dress. I guess the key here is what ever look you put together, if you love it----- it works!!!

Like with most jewelry, it's about an attitude and how it makes you feel.

In future posts I will try and touch on the different types of jewelry made by different tribes, the most common stones used and some of the other traditions with this fantastic art.

Until next time !

I totally agree with you!! I started out wearing VERY small pieces and over the years have worked into some bigger ones. My husband would have me wearing the largest of the large, if I was comfortable with it. I know he can't wait for the day that I pick out a huge piece and ask for it. Who is your favorite artist or do you have one?

What was your first piece of turquoise jewelry that your husband got for you?

You mentioned earlier that you have many, many pieces. What is your all time favorite piece or do you have one?

Hummm, my favorite artist is Gale Self. I think he makes pieces that I gravitate to because I love to wear jewelry that make a statement.

We were in Albuquerque, NM when Tim purchased me my first piece. It was a three strand liquid silver necklace with turquoise nuggets. I still have it today.

You know it would be hard for me to say which piece is my favorite. I tend to wear jewelry depending on my mood.
I actually purchase very very few pieces myself. Tim buys most of it for me, so much of it has a great sentimental meaning for me.
I almost always get fantastic pieces from him on Valentines Day and Christmas.
I have a stunning turquoise nugget belt, necklace, earrings and bracelet he got me. Is very old but in fantastic condition(I would never have spent that much money on myself). I also have a huge rough cut cross done by Gale that he gave me two years ago that I wear a great deal.
I am very lucky to have a husband who has such an appreciation for the art of jewelry.

Do you have any biographical information on Gale Self? I have done lots of searches for him and his jewelry and can find very little on him. Thanks!

Is there a tribal style that you tend to gravitate toward?

We should have a detailed bio on Gale and his wife Saundra very soon.
Our bio page is under construction.
Gale and Saundra are putting together some hand picked information along with a photo.

Each tribe has it's own draw. I love the massiveness of the Navajo tribe. I most likely have more of the Navajo pieces than the other tribe. Zunis do outstanding inlay which for most people is an easier mix with their business lives.

Will you be adding any new artists soon?

What is your favorite Navajo style piece?

Actually we will be adding a new artist in the next few weeks. She does more of the contemporary designs. As much as I love the southwest styles there are times a more modern look is needed. This artist works with 18ct. gold along with her stones. I think you will love her stuff also.

My favorite Navajo piece is a concha belt Tim got me for Valentine's Day several years ago.
The conchoas are solid turquoise and are approx. 2"x 3" they are slabbed turquoise set in sterling.
This is a magnificent belt. Looks perfect with blue jeans and a white shirt.

Do you have a favorite Zuni or inlay piece??

When shopping for jewelry for yourself, do you go for more contemporary and modern or more traditional? Which do you have the most of?

ALmost all Native American jewelry I come across is in sterling silver. Are their any artists who do gold?

Yes, actually I do have a favorite Zuni piece. Tim got me an inlaid piece somewhat like a Cleopatra collar. It is pink and Australian opal. It is a striking piece.

Hummmmm shopping my jewelry myself--- I would say I tend to buy more of the modern and that's only because when Tim buys me jewelry he usually buys more traditional pieces. I don't know that I favor one over the other, again it really depends on my mood.

Yes, there are a few artists that use gold in their designs.
Most artist prefer the silver because it is less expensive, holding down the cost of their work. In years past, silver has been at a very reasonable price point, but the last year or two the cost of silver has more than tripled. So for items that have a lot of silver work in them like a concha belt the increase unfortunately is reflected in the finished product. Most of the gold you will seen now are in the inlay pieces or they are an overlay to the silver.
